Curriculum and Assessment

The curriculum in the classrooms is MS College and Career Readiness Standard based with a student-centered focus on these standards. Instruction is taught at the rigor needed to prepare students to reach proficient or advanced achievement level on the end of the year state assessments. The preparation for meeting high school graduation requirements of passing end of course assessments begins at the elementary level. For more information regarding the MS College and Career Readiness standards, visit  MDE College and Career Readiness Standards. District and State Assessments

The Mississippi Board of Education maintains a school district accountability system that is correlated to performance of its schools. The Office of Student Assessment administers all state and federally mandated assessments for students in Mississippi’s public schools. All students enrolled in school are required to participate in all state assessments. The District has a policy that does not allow students to “opt-out” of taking the state assessments.

State Assessments

State assessments for Elementary include the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment, the 3rd Grade MAAP ELA (Gateway), the MAAP assessments in grades 3-8 for Math and ELA, MAAP assessments in grades 5 and 8 for Science, and the English Language Proficiency Test. Your child’s performance on these assessments are used as measures of progress towards being able to fulfill traditional diploma track graduation requirements for passing End of Course Assessments in high school. Information regarding State Assessments can be found by visiting Office of Student Assessment.

State Assessments are taken at the end of the school year, starting in March and ending in May.

District Assessments

Throughout the year students participate in district assessments such as NWEA and CASE. NWEA is taken in August and January for all students grades k-8. NWEA is taken for a third time in May in grades k-2. NWEA is a nationally normed adaptive assessment used to measure growth and proficiency. CASE benchmarks, which mirror state assessments on the MS College and Career Readiness standards, are administered three times a year: October, December, and March.
